I was wondering "why did they announce it today instead of Tuesday?" then I remembered the elections. Steve probably didn't want to be totally lost in the media swamp.

I'm not sure if my macbook's shutdown apply to the ones being discussed, but I suppose that's my question. I received my macbook in early september, and within a week it started to freeze the screen intermittently, and after a few days became more and more frequent. BUT THEN it started giving me kernel panics often. Both issues built up until I was having to shut down my computer 7+ times in a day. These were all random occurrences with no links to running certain programs, etc. I sent it in to AppleCare and they replaced the HD (after I had already wiped it, reinstalled, and the problem started again). After a couple weeks of getting my serviced macbook back, the problem has started again from the start, starting slow and then happening 7+ times in a day. AppleCare has told me that there is nothing they can do until the problem becomes increasingly worse, to the point that they can reproduce the problem easily. This is very upsetting, since with the very consistent progression of these kernel panics (and freezes) will land right around my midterms....ANYONE have ANY suggestions here? I don't even know if this is in relation to the random shutdowns you're talking about... But I'm desperate here.

The only thing interesting in the above is the "64". I suspect it doesn't just mean "64 bit Intel chips in the Mac Pro and Xserve", but probably also relates to Leopard. If Leopard does have significant support for 64 bit addressing spaces etc, I wonder if that'll be on both the G5 and the ia64 versions?
BTW, even if I believed that Apple was going to come out with an Apple cellphone (and I don't (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2674706&postcount=359), I've never seen so many people absolutely convinced of the existance of an unlikely product.), WWDC would unquestionably be a bad place to announce it. If you believe such a thing exists, wait for an appropriate consumer-oriented show or a special event.
Edit: Of course, the "64" could just mean that they're finally going to announce the PowerBook G5!

I would guess that iPhone5 will be duel mode GSM and CMDA... so I would assume the 4G should be able to adapt to either.
isn't LTE a completely different spec than GSM or CDMA?

It really doesn't mean much to me, since I have had their entire catalog on cd since 1987...
The money they are talking about doesn't really go to the Beatles, since the Beatles were bad financial managers when they were together, they get very little of this money. They all made their fortunes after the brake up...;)

I drop calls like mad with AT&T. Wonder if it's about time to head over to Verizon, especially if it starts beating AT&T to the punch with features like these.
I can tell you in San Francisco, a Droid on Verizon is at least 10-100 times better than an iPhone on AT&T.

Well, speak for yourself, because I beg to disagree by a LONG shot. Brazil has one of the cleanest and most modern democracies in this world, with flawless election systems and an absolutely open press and media, even IF people prefer to choose the "wrong" candidates.
Despite all problems that may exist in certain areas, no Brazilian needs to accept this sort of inferiority complex anymore, especially considering the more than visible evolution of the country when compared to the 80s and 90s. We are no longer the "nation of the future"; so it's more than high time that Brazilians should understand that as much as any foreigner does.
I think we live in different countries, because what you see here is:
through taxes, we pay the State for education. But if we want good education, we must buy back the private sector. We pay twice for the same service.
through taxes, we pay the state for health. But if we want good health, we need to buy again from private enterprise. We pay twice for the same service.
through taxes, we pay the state for safekeeping. But if you want good security, we must buy back the private sector. We pay twice for the same service.
through property taxes, we pay the State for good roads. But if you want good road, we need to pay tolls. We pay twice for the same service.
social security is a joke. Even if we pay the maximum amount for retirement, when we receive, we receive less than a third of the amount paid to social security.
no tools for punishing politicians who carry out crimes against the public budget. The politicians protect themselves. There is no transparency in public accounts.
The weight tributary to the Brazilian state suffocates the taxpayers more and more.
we have the highest interest rates in the world. And there is no control over the banking spread.
There is no project for the country. Whether or not the government is PT or PSDB, little changes.

Sligthly off-topic:
Judging from history what do you thing, when would iLife '07 be available?
I am seriously considering to wait a little longer (the 1.83 model has left me strongly disappointed).
So I thought I can wait a little longer and buy when iLife 07 will be included in the purchase (to make up for the lousy specs )

Nice update except for the videocard and maybe the price. It's good that it arrives now for the people who were waiting for the update.

I'm definitely staying away from this update for now. Something about it actually just kind of scares me. It helps that my week 21 MacBook has only had the mooing issue and nothing else (so far). That issue has gone away with SMC Firmware Update 1.0, and I've had a great laptop ever since.
I feel rather lucky. :)
I don't get people who avoid important updates. I'd install it just to avoid future problems from forming. My MacBook runs fine with the update, and the fans are coming on less often as well which is appreciated.
Isn't everyone assuming here that the root problem is a heatsink issue? Has Apple ever announced that it was? Perhaps it isn't at all, or that's only part of the equation, and it is in fact an SMC control problem. There's a lot of FUD here - people saying they've had extra screws drilled in their MacBooks which is total BS.
I wouldn't try second-guessing Apple engineers. If they've released an update recommended to make the MacBook more reliable, I say use it.
Absolutely. I'm a bit surprised at all the misinformation (nobody is drilling a friggin' screw in your MacBooks, people).

I find it weird that you get a remote control and front row on a lower end machine but you can't even get it as a custom configuration option on the higher end machines. I understand that these are supposed to be the "professional" machines and iMacs are for "consumers," but in the real world that delineation doesn't mean much. Many people buying Mac Pros are getting them as their home computer, and it's pretty lame that you drop extra money on the high end and can't do some of the really cool things that can be done on a lower end model.
No remote? No Photo Booth? That's got to be a deal breaker for a lot of folks. ;)
As for the real world, many professionals have funds to purchase these machines as they will use the speed. It seems to me that most "consumers" are not able or willing to plop down the cash to buy a Mac Pro when an iMac or MacBook or even Mac Mini will more than suit their needs.

Yeah!!! You forgot the part about world peace and end of hunger....
Yeah!!! You against the world! I suppose you also write to fashion magazines, complaining that all their models have perfect, skinny bodies....
But all kidding aside, without Flash, you must be having a pretty poor and limited web experience. Or, you just hang out on the Apple site.... :D
So, let me get this straight.
You are for:
Sloppy code, anorexia, bulimia, and famine.
And you are against:
Apple and world peace.
Good choice.

i just got my macbook back yesterday after waiting for over a month for them to replace the heatsink
Is this all the service they offered you? I contacted Apple when the RSS started to become a problem and was told that I could go to a certified Apple repair centre of choice.
I phoned one up who had already dealt with a former TIBook of mine and they said they would order the heatsink and get back to me when it arrives. My MacBook then got a date with the repair man the next day and the morning after I could go and collect it (new screw not included).
What I do recommend to everyone, is that they create a guest account WITH admin rights before they hand in the computer, so that the guys can play around with sleep settings and have a look at the system log.

wont miss him I think the Facebook app could be much better
Do you actually know anything about him? He is a high profile developer that worked on the original Firefox and the firebug extension. If he quits, it means something is VERY wrong with the Apple approval process.
I have a strong feeling Apple gave him a hard time with an update to the app so he was like **** that, it is not worth it.

I like the dual screen idea, one for video, one for e-ink.
Imagine today's 60-gig 5G iPod. For our new model, there's a hinge on the top and a crease down the middle between the plastic and the chrome. The device is magnetically sealed, just like the macbooks.
Simply flip the full-screen oled over to the back, so it's now flush with (and protected by) the back of the iPod. Now, instead of seeing your full size video you're seeing a full size e-ink screen.
Sweetness.

This would be a huge announcement if it comes in the next week or two. What a great way to get everyone talking about the iPod during the holiday shopping season.
The Beatles albums will sell... but more importantly, they will sell iPods.
It probably won't come before Christmas. Would cut into sales of the Beatles LOVE Songtrack. A MACWORLD accouncement would be about right!
